Learning Outcomes for English Majors

Students who graduate with a B.A. in English from Virginia Tech must demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Reflect on the meaning and value of studying English.
  2. Analyze and evaluate their own work; integrate and synthesize work completed in different classes or contexts.
  3.  Read critically and compose effective analyses of literary texts.
  4. Search for, select, and analyze information from electronic databases and other research sources; compose essays that integrate outside sources in ethical, accurate, readable, and effective ways.
  5. Present ideas effectively using oral and visual modes of communication.
  6. Relate the study of English to global and multicultural contexts; appreciate diversity in authors, texts, and viewpoints.
