Area 1 Courses

The English Department has three courses in Area 1: Writing and Discourse.

ENGL 1105: FRESHMAN ENGLISH

The first part of a two-course composition sequence. Critical literacy: Introduction to analytical, critical, and interpretive writing and reading of primarily essay-length work; research; intensive practice in writing and revision; fundamentals of oral presentations. (3H,3C)

ENGL 1106: FRESHMAN ENGLISH

The second part of a two-course composition sequence. 1106: The Writing Project: Continued study in analytical, critical, and interpretive writing; reading of multiple book-length texts; intensive instruction and practice in writing and revision of longer work, including research; experience in oral presentation.

ENGL H1204: HONORS FRESHMAN ENGLISH

Introduction to analytical, critical, and interpretive writing and reading at an advanced level and accelerated pace for students whose test scores and high school work indicate readiness for the Honors level of complexity, responsibility, and initiative; in a single semester, reviews the work of 1105 and focuses on the work of 1106 at the Honors level. Placement by the English Department required. (3H,3C)

AREA 1 PLACEMENT PROCEDURES

Your enrollment in freshman composition courses is dependent upon your English placement score and/or any prior work or credits that will cover the requirements, such as AP or IB scores or transfer credits from another institution.

What follows is only a guide. Your in-major advisor or the advising coordinator for your department is responsible for discussing with you placement in Area 1 courses. Please speak with that person if you believe an error has been made in your placement.

  • do not have appropriate combined scores on SAT I Verbal, SAT II Writing, and Standardized High School Class Rank
  • do not have AP, IB, or transfer credit for ENGL 1105 and ENGL 1106

  • have appropriate combined scores on SAT I Verbal, SAT II Writing, and Standardized High School Class Rank
the potential for Advanced Standing credit for ENGL 1105

ENGL 1106 or ENGL H1204 (please check with your advisor for the exact placement)

If you make a C- or better in the first enrollment, then you will receive credit for ENGL 1105.

  • have a score of 3 on the AP English-Lang/Comp or Lit/Comp Test
  • have a score of 4 on the English A1 & A2 IB higher level tests
  • have transfer credit for ENGL 1105
ENGL 1105 ENGL 1106 or ENGL H1204 (please check with your advisor for the exact placement)
  • have a score of 4 or 5 on the AP English-Lang/Comp or Lit/Comp Test
  • have a score of 5 on the English A1 & A2 IB higher level tests
  • have transfer credit for ENGL 1105 + ENGL 1106

your Area 1 Liberal Education requirement is complete
NOTE: If you have transferred to VT from another institution, your AP or IB scores might not have been sent to the Registrar. That means that any prior credit you have for Area 1 writing requirements might not be on your VT record. In such cases, please have the scores sent from the relevant testing institution to the VT Registrar.
