Department of English

Area 1 Courses--Curriculum for Liberal Education

Overview: The English Department offers three courses in Area 1: Writing and Discourse. Two of these courses are a sequence (1105-1106). ENGL 1105 is a prerequisite for ENGL 1106. ENGL H1204 is an honors course. To complete your Area 1 requirement in the English Department, you need to complete either ENGL 1106 or H1204 with a passing grade.

You may be able to get credit for one or more of these courses based on AP or IB scores or on the department's placement score. The department uses a combination of your scores on SAT I Verbal, SAT II Writing, and Standardized High School Class Rank. You may also be able to transfer credit from another institution.

ENGL 1105: Introduction to College Composition

ENGL 1105 emphasizes analysis and critical thinking. In this course you will engage writing assignments that challenge you to examine your own experiences and put those experiences to use as you encounter new situations, new topics, and new ways of writing your knowledge.

ENGL 1106: Writing from Research

ENGL 1106 focuses on research methods, writing from sources, and producing longer and more complex compositions. The writing you do in this class will ask you to research using primary and secondary sources, integrating your own ideas with the ideas of published writers and speakers.

ENGL H1204: Honors English

ENGL H1204 engages students in an advanced level of critical reading, writing, and thinking as well as including a research dimension. In this class you will be asked to challenge your writing skills by integrating multiple forms of research together with your experience.

AREA 1 PLACEMENT PROCEDURES

Your enrollment in freshman composition courses depends on your English placement scores and/or any prior work or credits that will cover the requirements, such as AP or IB scores or transfer credits from another institution.
