Undergraduate Programs

With its three options in Professional Writing, Creative Writing, and Literature, Language, and Culture, the English major prepares you for a career in a number of exciting and imaginative fields. If you see yourself working in business, government, or at a non-profit organization; honing your skills as a writer, editor, or document designer; sharing your love of literature as a teacher, or would like to extend your education by attending graduate or professional school, English is the major for you.

The major in English is composed of

  • an in-major core of 16 hours

  • upper-division option-based requirements ranging from 18 to 25 hours

  • 12-15 hours of English electives: 2 4000-level courses required; 3 additional courses to be chosen from 3000- and 2000-level courses (NOTE: only 1 permitted below the 3000-level).

Required one-hour corequisite courses at the sophomore and senior levels introduce you to the major, assist you with post-graduation transitions, and help you begin, organize, and revise a required ePortfolio demonstrating your achievement of the learning outcomes for English majors.

Creative Writing

The 53-hour Creative Writing (CW) Option of the major is aimed at those students who want to pursue a career as a writer of poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, or drama, or those who wish to enter the fields of publishing, editing, or any career that requires established and multi-dimensional writing skill. more

Literature, Language, and Culture

The 50-53 hour Literature, Language, & Culture (LLC) Option of the major is aimed at students who are interested in the study of literature and who want to pursue careers in such areas as law, business, government, publishing, advertising, social services, and education. more

Professional Writing

The 50-hour Professional Writing (PW) Option of the major is designed for students who want to learn the writing and editing skills required in today's competitive workplace, develop their design and web writing abilities, learn to create proposals and reports, and build a portfolio of real-world writing samples. more
