Spotlight on Achievement

In 2008, faculty in the Department of English at Virginia Tech won an unprecedented number of national awards. Paul Sorrentino and Bob Hicok both won Guggenheim Fellowships. Ed Falco and Bob Hicok won fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. Dan Mosser was a Leverhulme Visiting Professor in the United Kingdom. These fellowships, based on a record of outstanding achievement, support ongoing writing and scholarship.
Prizes and awards recognized writing already published. Steven Salaita won a Gustavus Myers Award, which recognizes the best books on human rights. Nikki Giovanni won the Carl Sandburg Literary Award and an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary work. Bob Hicok won the Bobbitt National Poetry Prize and the Pushcart Prize.
