Plagiarism and the Virginia Tech Honor System

Plagiarism not only degrades a student's integrity and prevents learning, it also breaks the law when plagiarized materials are published. More immediately for Tech students, plagiarism violates the Virginia Tech Honor Code.

In the Honor System website, the issues are explained as follows:

The Virginia Tech Honor Code embodies a spirit of mutual trust and intellectual honesty that is central to the very nature of the university and represents the highest possible expression of shared values among the members of the university community.

The functions of the Honor System are to communicate the meaning and importance of intellectual honesty to all students in the university; to articulate and support the interest of the community in maintaining the highest standards of conduct in academic affairs; and to identify, sanction and educate those who fail to live up to the stated expectations of the university community with regard to these standards.

The students and faculty who give their energy to the Honor System are working for YOU . . .

  • to protect your learning environment and
  • to protect the value and reputation of your Virginia Tech diploma.

YOU are part of the Honor System.

Now it's time to take the Guided Honor System Website Tour, which focuses on questions relating to plagiarism that will be included in the upcoming Self-Test.
