Student Profiles: Sarah Holloway
My interests are in composition, thinking about how students write and how to engage them in the writing classroom, and in modern poetry. My research will focus specifically on two modern poets, Elizabeth Bishop and Jorie Graham. I am interested in how Bishop addresses the issue of failing language in her poetry. What happens when words fail to capture a moment, experience, feeling, or object concretely? What happens when we must face the ‘finitude’ of our humanity and our language? I hope to discover how Bishop’s dealings with this issue influenced the later poet Jorie Graham.
