Student Profiles: Jennifer Cover
My
research interests include genre studies, writing in the disciplines, and the
rhetoric of academia. My master’s thesis involved an in-depth
study of the tabletop role-playing game as a distinct genre separate from computer
role playing games. My most recent teaching involved taking a writing
in the disciplines approach to first-year composition, and this has been the
inspiration for my current research interests. I’m interested in
the rhetorical approaches that academics from different disciplines take in
both their writing and their speaking. I’m curious how interdisciplinary
committees work together and communicate and how/if disciplinary conventions
affect the rhetorical approaches taken by committee members in administrative
work. I’m also interested in general definitions of academic writing
and research and how these vary by discipline, including expectations for both
faculty and students.
